Buddhism is different from Hinduism. In one aspect, Buddhism does not value personal ego, pride and greediness of anything. However, these apply to advanced religious people like (monks, nuns or anyone who wants to reach enlightenment. You wouldn't commit a sin if you follow the 8 good tasks in their life. Working hard such as building Angkor Wat or other temples would not violate Buddhism principle rules if there is no killing, slavery and other ugly things. People at all level need to do their daily work with compassion. This is as far as I know about Buddhism.
In the Khmer Empire, the people who were behind the construction of the temples were Hindu priests and King gods. They were advanced religious people. I believed they motivated the people who actually built the temples with the points I mentioned earlier. In Buddhism, they couldn't do this if their minds reached the advanced state of Buddha's teaching.
I believe that religion can be a powerful substance to motivate people. I means religion can be manipulated to motivate people.
One thing in Buddhism is that you can't force people.
I think Buddhism country live in peace. in some extension without the motivation, believers are relaxing.
In leadership, relaxing is a recipe of disaster for the country. leaders should be proactive, taking initiatives, and expand the country strength.
